County's crime hits 18-year low

Crime in Nottinghamshire has fallen to its lowest level for almost 20 years, according to the latest police figures.

The total number of crimes in the county for 2007/08, fell by more than 11,000 to 124,880, the lowest level since 1989.

Burglary, car and violent crime have fallen but drug offences have increased by almost 20%, partly due to greater police reporting and awareness.

The latest figures mean crime has fallen for a fifth consecutive year.

Working hard

The number of drugs offences increased by almost 700 but chief constable Steve Green said this was evidence of Nottinghamshire Police's "continuing drive to tackle drug dealing and drug-related crime in the county.

"In particular, the work of officers involved in Operation Glacier, which has been targeting street-level drug dealers across the county, has had a significant impact.

"No-one within the organisation will rest on their laurels and the force will continue to work closely with both its partners and the public of Nottinghamshire to drive down crime in the county," he said.

There were 9,639 recorded burglaries in 2007/08, 980 fewer than the previous year.

Vehicle crime fell by more than 2,500 recorded offences and there were 2,596 fewer recorded violent crimes than in 2006/7.
