Peel does not make the city a nice place to live, says the council |
A former boxing champion who dropped orange peel on a street in Nottingham has been fined 350. Kirkland Laing, who was British and European welterweight champion, was initially issued with a 50 fixed penalty notice on Robin Hood Street.
But he was given the increased fine after failing to pay the penalty, and then not turning up in court.
The city council said the case sent out a clear message to people that littering would not be tolerated.
Gifted boxer
Mr Laing's son, Marcus, said: "He should not have had to pay the fine in the first place as the peel is biodegradable.
"We can't believe it has come to this, the whole case should have been thrown out."
Barrie James from the city council said the rules were clear.
"We are going to do everything we can to discourage people from dropping litter," said Mr Jones.
"Yes orange peel is biodegradable, eventually, but while it is lying there it is not helping to make Nottingham a nice place to live."
Kirkland, 53, was a gifted boxer who gained a shock victory over Panamanian Roberto Duran in Detroit in 1982.
