Road floods following heavy rain
Part of the A617 was closed in Nottinghamshire due to flooding caused by recent heavy rain.

The road was closed off at Newark where flood warnings have also been issued for the River Trent.

However, the Environment Agency confirmed they were keeping an eye on water levels of the River Trent.

The district council said some members of the travelling community on Tolney Lane had been asked to move to higher ground as a precaution.

'Alleviate risk'

Several families in the area had also been put in bed and breakfast accommodation.

Ian Harrison from the council's risk and resilience team, said: "We have heard from the Environment Agency that levels [of the River Trent] have held steady overnight as we expected they would do.

"There are some parts in Newark which are at risk of flooding and these include properties but there is an expectation that it [the river] will top over its banks and go into farmland... which will help alleviate the risk in Newark."

He said that levels of other tributaries near the River Trent could also rise as a result of the recent rain.

Flood warnings have also been issued for the river at nearby Farndon.
