Flood warnings after heavy rain
Flooding in Hull
Thousands of homes were damaged by the summer floods
Homeowners in part of East Yorkshire are being warned of potential flooding following several days of heavy rain.

The Environment Agency has issued a flood warning at the Burstwick Drain and said 180 properties in Burstwick and nearby Hedon were at risk.

Six pumps have been put in place along the drain and hundreds of sandbags have been distributed as a precaution.

The Environment Agency said it was expecting more rainfall, and was watching the situation "very closely".

Flood warnings are also in place for the River Foulness and in the Holderness area.

We have dealt with a number of flooding incidents in the area and as always, are prepared should the situation worsen

Area manager Craig McGarvey said: "We have staff on the scene dealing with the situation, pumping water to keep levels down.

"With more rainfall expected, we will continue to issue further warnings as needed.

"People affected by these flood warnings should start to make preparations if they can."

East Riding of Yorkshire Council said it was working with the Environment Agency to "ensure that any areas that may be at risk are supported".

Warning to motorists

A spokesman added: "We would like to emphasise that we are taking a pro-active approach to the current situation and all measures are precautionary."

Fire crews had to constantly pump water out of Burstwick Drain last June after heavy rainfall put homes at risk of flooding.

Some roads have been left impassable after heavy rain left standing water. Motorists have been urged to take care.

The road between Catwick and Sigglesthorne has been closed by police after a car became stuck in flood water.

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said there was extensive flooding near houses in Owston Ferry and Immingham.

Spokesman Glenn Ramsden said: "We have dealt with a number of flooding incidents in the area and as always, are prepared should the situation worsen.

"Our control staff are working closely with the Met Office and Environment Agency in an attempt to predict the likelihood of any further incidents."

Burstwick is eight miles from Hull, where thousands of homes were damaged by last summer's floods.
