Customs officers at Nottingham East Midlands Airport have said drug smugglers are using more sophisticated techniques to get past security. Record seizures have been made in past weeks and officers think these successes are forcing criminals to try new ways of concealing the drugs.
Much of the class A drugs come in on cargo planes from South America.
As well as being hidden in books and golf clubs, cocaine has also been found mixed into hair products and water.
Customs officer Alan McKellar said: "We have had several seizures of cocaine in suspension in hair products as well as the old favourite of books.
"But we have also found cocaine in wicker baskets, in cotton reels and even ribbon reels."
