Gritters are being prepared for a possible cold winter |
Extra salt is being stockpiled to keep Nottinghamshire's roads running smoothly over the winter months. Highways staff at the county council are preparing for a possible severe winter by ordering in an extra 4,000 tonnes - 25% more than usual.
The salt will be stored in six compounds across the county from where it will be spread on A and B roads.
In total 19,000 tonnes of salting grit will be spread on the county's routes - costing 2.3m.
The announcement was made as Met Office forecasters warned of a colder than average winter.
Officials have warned that even gritted roads can prove dangerous and motorists should judge for themselves whether it is safe to travel and if their journey is really necessary in cold weather.
