Police cannot provide a motorcycle escort for this year's egg run |
Organisers of Nottingham's annual motorcycle Easter egg run say the event could be in jeopardy this year. They claim police will not give them an escort through the city centre to County Hall with Easter eggs for needy children and the elderly.
The event has become a tradition and has been running for around 20 years.
Nottinghamshire Police confirmed they were unable to provide an escort to the procession, but said they would meet organisers to find a solution.
Toy and egg run organiser Keith Glenn said: "The main point of the event is to get Easter eggs to underprivileged children and to the elderly people in council-run homes.
"So the only option I've got now is to cancel the big procession - the actual event still takes place, but we meet at County Hall."
Find solution
Organisers added they were worried the toy run in December would also have to be cancelled.
A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said: "(The force) can confirm that it no longer has the capacity to provide a police motorcycle escort to those motorcyclists taking part in the Easter egg run.
"We will, however, be working with the event organisers to find a solution to this issue so this charity event can go ahead as planned."
The issue will be discussed at a meeting between Nottinghamshire Police, Nottinghamshire County Council and the event organisers in early March.
Meanwhile, anyone who wants to take part in the Egg Run on 20 March is advised to travel to County Hall with their gifts.
