Threatened school vows to fight
Staff at Nottingham's only all-girls state school are vowing to fight its proposed closure.

Manning Comprehensive School for Girls in Aspley may be forced to shut in a major overhaul of secondary schools being considered by the city council.

The school's head teacher, Dr Roger Shipton, said it has a crucial role in multi-cultural Britain and provides parents with a vital element of choice.

A consultation programme into the plans is currently under way.

Final decision

Mr Shipton said: "Eighty to 90 parents, Muslim parents, have chosen this school because of their strong faith principles

"Without it there is no other state school that will accommodate their faith needs and I think that element of choice is important."

A 135m revamp would see, among other changes, Bulwell's two secondary schools merging and Aspley's Manning School and Fairham Community College in Clifton would close.

The city's proposals were unveiled on Tuesday and final decisions are expected in July.
