Diversions caused by the scheme created traffic confusion
Major new roadworks in Nottingham city centre have been causing serious problems for some bus passengers.

Work for the Turning Point scheme means Burton Street is closed - with diversions bringing gridlock.

Some Nottingham City Transport (NCT) customers told BBC Radio Nottingham there was much confusion on Monday.

NCT operations director Barry Birch said it was the biggest temporary shake-up to routes in a while, but delays would improve.

He said: "It's going to promote public transport within the city centre. It's actually going to give my vehicles - and our competitors' vehicles for that matter - bus priority measures.

"And it's certainly going to make it easier for our customers to transfer from service to service, or from bus to tram."

The Turning Point is an 11.7m government-funded scheme to radically change the way traffic flows around Nottingham city centre, reduce the dominance of cars and give greater priority to pedestrians and public transport.

It is currently on schedule to finish by the end of 2006.
