Trams' routes decision postponed

Decisions on the two new routes have been postponed
Plans to extend Nottingham's tram system have been put back to allow the government to say whether the economic argument stands up.

Nottingham City Council and the county council have decided to postpone any decision on the two new routes.

One would go to Chilwell via Beeston, and the other to Clifton via Wilford.

It was felt the timetable to review and approve plans for the Department of Transport would be too tight ahead of local elections in May 2005.

There is a wider review of government spending, including transport, which would slow down any decision.

And while they wait, the city and county councils will look at ways to speed up the process of acquiring properties which will be directly affected by the two routes.

Line One opened between the city and Hucknall earlier this year, with talk of the two other lines previously scheduled for completion in 2010.
