Drop in city beggars, study says
Beggar
Collection boxes were set up as an alternative to giving beggars money
A new study has revealed a huge fall in begging in Nottingham city centre in the last two years.

University of Nottingham researchers found that begging has fallen by 85% since July 2002.

The city council says it proves its poster campaign urging people not to give to beggars has been effective.

The authority has also sought banning orders against known beggars - two of whom have been jailed for breaching the conditions.

Nottingham City Council used a controversial poster campaign saying many beggars are drug addicts who will use money given to them to buy heroin and cocaine.

Instead, collection boxes were placed around the city, giving the public an opportunity to donate to the homeless.
