High winds cause damage to roofs
Nottingham train station
Two platforms were closed after the accident
Strong winds have blown a section of Nottingham's main train station off.

Services which run through Nottingham train station were severely disrupted by the gales. Two platforms were closed to all trains and the public.

Meanwhile, part of the roof at the Victoria Leisure Centre in Sneinton, was blown off on Saturday afternoon.

No-one was injured during either of the incidents which happened on Saturday afternoon.

Pool closed

Officials at Nottingham train station confirmed that platforms three and six were closed to all trains while structural engineers were called in to assess the damage.

Some roof tiles blew down on to the platform at 1430 GMT on Saturday.

Passengers and staff were warned to stay away from any of the glass-roofed walkways while the high winds continued.

Central Trains customer services manager Stephen Hall said: "Anything [trains] that comes into Nottingham is affected."

"We've closed off affected areas and made announcements for people to say away from glass-roofed areas."

Despite the damage to the roof of the city council owned Victoria leisure centre, many of the activities continued as usual.

Leisure centre manager Mick Bush said: " A section of the skylight has blown off.

"The centre is open but the main hall and the main pool have been cordoned off for safety reasons.

"The damage isn't extensive and we hope to get contractors out to assess the damage as soon as the wind eases."

A spokeswoman for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue said the high winds had brought down trees and chimney stacks across the county.
