Nottingham's multi-million pound tram system has been officially launched by the Transport Secretary Alistair Darling. On Tuesday, fare-paying passengers will board a tram in the city for the first time in nearly 70 years.
The Transport Minister and several local dignitaries travelled by tram to the Old Market Square where Mr Darling laid a plaque.
The first line runs between Nottingham city centre and Hucknall.
Mr Darling said: "It's an excellent ride and I'm sure this tram will bring a lot of benefits to Nottingham.
"I know its been a long time in the coming and is a very good example that if you're prepared to spend the money, all �200m of it.
It is expected that the tram system will take an estimated two million car journeys off the roads each year.
"It'll take people out of their cars, it'll make it easier to get about the city and it'll be good for the city and good for the reputation of the city," Mr Darling said.
The tram system uses 15 vehicles, each of which can accommodate 190 passengers.
