The headstocks are a landmark of the area |
The owners of the former Clipstone Colliery site have submitted plans to demolish the headstocks. If the move is approved, the area could be transformed into a business park and 500 homes.
Coal mining at Clipstone, near Mansfield in Nottinghamshire, ended in April last year when UK Coal decided against renewing the lease.
A vote among local residents supported the idea of knocking down the headstocks despite their listed status.
The Coal Authority and Welbeck Estates have now applied for special permission to demolish the two giant structures.
Plans have also been submitted to build a business park and housing.
Newark and Sherwood District Council will consider the proposals in the next few months.
