Work starts to close pit
Clipstone Colliery
The two headstocks are protected by conservation order
A disused coal mine in Nottinghamshire is being filled with thousands of tons of stone as part of work to close down the site.

Clipstone Colliery near Mansfield was shut after UK Coal said it was no longer economically viable.

Mining at the pit ended in April 2003 after 80 years of production.

The colliery was put back into the hands of the Coal Authority, who were unable to find another operator to take it over.

Work to fill in the two main shafts with stone started last week, but the future development of site is still uncertain.

Local residents recently voted to remove two giant headstocks at the pit.

But the headstocks have conservation orders on them and discussions have begun to decide how to proceed.
