One of two adventurers seeking to become the first UK woman to trek unaided to the South Pole is keeping her progress a secret. Fiona Thornewill, 37, and Rosie Stancer, 43, set off on the same day from the edge of Antarctica.
However they insist their 700-mile (1127km) trek is not a race.
The two women, who flew to Antarctica on the same plane, started on 30 November.
Ms Stancer, from south-west London, covered 68 miles (109km) in her first eight days.
Lost contact
However Ms Thornewill, from Thurgaton, Nottinghamshire, does not want her position disclosed, said her husband Mike said on Wednesday.
He said: "She does not want it to develop into a race - she respects Rosie."
He added that he had now lost contact with his wife because her solar powered satellite phone would not charge.
However he can monitor her position via a tracking beacon and she has a spare phone battery for emergencies.
