UK trio set polar records
Fiona and Mike Thornewill become the first couple to reach both poles on foot

A British team have trekked into the record books after reaching the North Pole on foot, a year after conquering the South Pole.

Catharine Hartley and Fiona Thornewill are the first women to walk to both poles and Fiona and her husband Mike are the first married couple to reach north and south.

Mike Thornewill told BBC Nottingham arriving at the North Pole was "absolutely awesome".

The trio's 56-day slog, led by Canadian guide Paul Landry, went smoothly although melting ice forced a 120 mile detour.
