Catharine Hartley and Fiona Thornewill are the first women to walk to both poles and Fiona and her husband Mike are the first married couple to reach north and south. Mike Thornewill told BBC Nottingham arriving at the North Pole was "absolutely awesome". The trio's 56-day slog, led by Canadian guide Paul Landry, went smoothly although melting ice forced a 120 mile detour. ![]() Catharine Hartley pulls the sled, weighing about 80 kilos ![]() The trio are raising money for charities Sense, Macmillan Cancer Relief and NSPCC ![]() A detour forced by melting ice extended the journey from 480 miles to about 600 miles ![]() Temperatures fell as low as -50�C during the 56-day journey ![]() The team is staying overnight at the pole before being airlifted to Canada as soon as weather allows ![]() Fiona Thornewill and Catharine Hartley were the first women to walk to the South Pole ![]() The team said reaching the North Pole was an "awesome" experience |
