School children across Nottinghamshire are preparing to return from the summer break next week - but there are not currently enough school crossing patrols to get them safely across the road. At the moment there are 65 vacancies for lollipop men and women across the county.
In areas like Gedling and Rushcliffe around half of all posts are vacant.
Nottinghamshire County Council now wants people to consider doing this part-time job as the new term starts.
Eddie Croot, a lollipop man from Bassetlaw, joked: "It is best this time of the year when you've got six weeks off and you still get paid!"
But he adds that he does find his duties very rewarding.
"You get a lot of thanks every day and then when it gets to Christmas you get a few special thank-you's, which is very nice - and you do feel as if you've been appreciated.
"I don't think anyone would do it entirely for the money, I think they want to do something for the community.
"You get to know a lot of people - even when you're walking around the village at other times little children speak to you and tell their parents 'Oh, it's my lollipop man'.'"
