Retirement age lifted for lollipop patrols
School crossing warden
There is a shortage of lollipop patrols in Rotherham
School crossing patrol wardens in Rotherham can now work until they are 70.

The move has been made to widen the pool of people eligible to be lollipop men and women.

The council will also allow existing patrols to work beyond the normal retirement age of 65 if they wish.

Of the 87 crossing points in Rotherham, 10 are vacant.

Supply teachers

One of them has not been staffed for two years.

In addition, more relief wardens are needed to cover when permanent patrols are not available.

Rotherham's cabinet has also approved a proposal to extend its policy of employing supply teachers over the age of 65 for a further 12 months,

The age limit was originally suspended in March 2002 because of the difficulty of finding enough supply teachers to cover for staff absences.
