Algae kills canal fish
Fish
The fish were starved of oxygen
Anglers have reported a shoal of dead fish on a Nottinghamshire canal.

The stretch of water on the Grantham Canal near Cotgrave is so overgrown that some fishermen are going elsewhere.

Anglers say up to 30 to 40 dead fish have floated to the surface of the canal near Cotgrave country park.

British Waterways says the problem has been caused by the hot weather increasing algae growth.

The algae are taking all the oxygen out of the water leaving suffocating some fish.

Mick Brookes is a regular canal user: "There's probably 30 or 40 dead fish from little ones to good size ones.

"They are lying there on top of the water with flies all over them.

"This can't be good for the environment."

British Waterways says it is installing eight oxygen pumps in that stretch of the canal and its officers are carrying out daily inspections while continuing to clear vegetation.
