Axed disabled staff meet union
People with physical or learning difficulties facing redundancy from a Northants County Council-owned firm are meeting with their union on Wednesday.

Up to 11 staff, working on assembly and packing, are to lose their jobs at Duston-based Nordis Industries.

The council decided hopes the cuts can save it 150,000 a year.

On Wednesday afternoon Unison union representatives are planning to meet the workers and their families to look at what action may be needed.

Sheltered workshops

The county council said any final decision would be taken early in the new year.

Spokesman said there would be no redundancies until March 2006.

On Wednesday, Robin Palfrey, local convenor for Unison, said he wanted to find out from the workers how the union could help them.

A spokeswoman for the council said on Wednesday: "The council's Employment and Disability Service will work with all those affected to assess whether any of them can work in the sign making side of the business and if not help them find alternative employment."
