A preferred bidder has been chosen to convert 47 schools in Northampton after the education system was changed from three-tiers to two. After months of evaluation Northants County Council selected Babcock and Brown consortium over Jarvis to carry-out the �100m restructuring project.
By September all the town's middle schools - which cater for pupils aged nine to 13 - will have been phased out.
Six new schools will also be built during the two-year project.
In February Babcock and Brown and Jarvis submitted proposals to the council and after months of evaluations Babcock was chosen.
Cabinet member for schools Olwen Loud said: "It has been a long road in coming to this recommendation and after detailed evaluation we are now in a position to consider going into the final stages of negotiation with one bidder."
Sixteen middle schools will close in September, 47 schools will be converted and six new schools will be built as part of the overhaul.
Some pupils will be housed in mobile classrooms and schools earmarked for closure while the work is carried-out.
The council is expected to endorse Babcock and Brown, subject to council conditions, on 27 July.
