Dental centre to 'fill the gap'

Northamptonshire is short of NHS dentists
A surgery offering emergency treatment to patients who cannot get an NHS dentist has opened in Northampton.

The Northampton Dental Access Centre in Far Cotton offers immediate treatment for unregistered patients.

The surgery is open one day a week, following similar schemes established in Corby and Towcester.

Tracey Pettitt, dental manager at the surgery, said:"We only have about 50% registration in Northamptonshire, and that hasn't really changed in years."

She said these patients are the ones who would use the new service regularly.

"This is a certain portion of the population who do not want to be registered with a dentist and they'd rather use the dental services when they need them," she added.

In Northamptonshire, dental practices with restricted or closed NHS lists are up to 87%.

Of 67 dental surgeries in the county, only nine were accepting new patients.
