Parking threatens dental surgery
Dentist Michael Proud
Dentist Michael Proud might close his surgery
One of the few remaining NHS dentists in Northampton might have to close - because patients have nowhere to park.

The county council plans to restrict parking in the St James area after complaints that patients take spaces meant for residents.

Dentist Michael Proud said: "We may have to shut down entirely, which would be a huge loss to the local community.

"So what they'd gain in the parking, they would lose, perhaps, in their dental care."

Residents said those visiting the shops in the local area were also infringing on their parking spots.

Northamptonshire County Council said the permit parking scheme, which is to begin in a week's time, might need to be "fine-tuned".

Half of people in England do not have a NHS dentist, Department of Health figures revealed last week.

Recently, the arrival of new NHS dentists in some towns and cities has been followed by long queues of people trying to register before the books fill up.
