A 10m project to protect a North Yorkshire town and villages from flooding has gone millions of pounds over budget, it has emerged. The Selby flood alleviation scheme has overspent by 3.7m just weeks after areas of the county were devastated by flash-flooding.
New computer modelling data has revealed that extra building is needed along parts of the scheme.
The Environment Agency said costs had risen after work was fast-tracked.
New earth embankments and walls are being built by contractors, who are also strengthening existing defence walls.
Selby and nearby areas were badly affected by floods in 2000 when the Ouse burst its banks.
Parts of Selby were also affected by the recent flash-flooding in the county, though other areas were the worst hit.
