Government disappoints on floods
Flood damage to bridge leading in Hawnby
The government has been asked to help fund flood damage repairs
A cash appeal to help North Yorkshire residents recover from flash floods has prompted a disappointing response from the government, a local MP has said.

Villages in the North York Moors suffered millions of pounds of damage when storms hit the area on 19 June.

Vale of York MP Anne McIntosh met with environment minister Elliott Morley on Monday to ask for financial support for affected householders and farmers.

But she said he told her the government could not cover a lot of the losses.

'Cut off'

"The outcome of the meeting was a little disappointing," she said.

"The minister says the losses have to come off their own insurance."

Miss McIntosh said it was particularly hard for many farmers who had already faced a difficult year financially and as a result were underinsured.

"Individual farms are cut off at the moment and the government won't give them any help," she said.

The government has agreed to help meet the cost of repairs to council owned roads and bridges, subject to applications from the North Yorkshire County Council and Hambleton District Council.
