High fashion is a feature of Royal Ascot |
Thousands of women descended on Royal Ascot at York for the world-famous Ladies Day on Thursday. Traditionally the busiest day of the five-day annual race meeting, 50,000 racegoers packed the stands at the Knavesmire course.
The Queen, dressed in a 1950s-style golden dress and matching hat, the Duke of Edinburgh and the Princess Royal attended the third day of the event.
Actresses Lorraine Chase and Trisha Penrose also visited the races.
Gold Cup
England football star Michael Owen spent a second day at Ascot with a male friend.
The highlight of the day's event was the Gold Cup - the oldest race at the Royal meeting - which was first run in 1807 when it was won by Master Jackey.
The cup was lifted by French challenger Westerner on Thursday.
Royal Ascot has been moved to York this year while redevelopment of the Berkshire course takes place.
It is the first time in the race meeting's history that it has been held away from Ascot.
