New city evening parking charges
York parking machine
There have been protests against increased parking charges
Cheaper evening parking is being introduced in York city centre.

The move follows complaints from bars and restaurants that previous evening charges, introduced in the spring, were driving away customers.

From Monday, York residents will be able to park for 1 from 6.00pm to 8.00am in council car parks and on metered streets.

At the same time the Askham Bar park and ride service is being extended until midnight.

Charities based in the city centre have also complained about parking charges.

But the Liberal Democrat controlled City of York Council says it will be consulting with voluntary organisations about concessions for key workers.

The council says it will also wants views on whether it should be possible to use credit cards or mobile phones to pay for parking.
