Police warning over internet scam
Woman surfing the internet
Police say criminals thrive on the honesty of their victims.
A Whitby man has been conned out of 3,500 after he was duped in a car-sale scam on the internet.

Police said the man was targeted by a bogus buyer who saw his car advertised for sale on a specialist website.

After negotiations, the victim received a bankers draft for more than the agreed amount and was asked to return the surplus.

The man checked to see if the bankers draft was genuine but was informed too late that it was a forgery.

Forged cheque

The buyer claimed to be from Holland and had offered to pay shipping costs for the car.

The victim received the Royal Bank of Scotland bankers draft and was asked to deduct the cost of the car, shipping and his expenses from the cashed amount.

He did this but never heard from the suspect again.

"If a deal appears too good to be true, it usually is," said a police spokeswoman.

She added that although the man did not lose his car, he did lose his money and that criminals thrived on the honesty of others.
