Bikers traditionally gather over the bank holiday period |
One man died and four were seriously injured in a spate of motorcycle accidents in North Yorkshire over Easter despite a police clampdown. Ten serious accidents involving motorbikes were reported in the county over the four-day period.
In the Yorkshire Dales alone, officers stopped 120 motorcycles and issued 47 fixed penalties in an operation aimed at reducing carnage on the roads.
Five bikers were reported for speeding, one at 103mph.
Extra care
On Friday, motorcyclist Martin Pearson, 27, of Lealholm was killed in a collision with a car at High Normanby Bends on the A171 Whitby to Scarborough road.
Sergeant Dave Hopper, from North Yorkshire Police, believes drivers of all vehicles need to take extra care, especially during busy bank holidays.
"Cars need to be aware that motorcycles can come up quickly behind them," he said.
"From the motorcyclists' point of view, they need to stick to speed limits, be aware of road conditions, be aware of other motorists and wear the right safety gear."
