Passengers will get information much quicker as staff go high-tech |
A train company has become the first in Britain to equip staff with handheld computers to bring up-to-the-minute travel information to passengers. GNER, which runs services from London to Edinburgh, has spent 1m on the new computer system.
It will allow on-board staff to access real-time information on train times, platform changes and network delays.
By June, it will have 160 devices in use - with at least one on each of its East Coast Main Line services.
The computers can provide information on all train services along the East Coast Main Line between Scotland and London, not just GNER trains.
Previously, train staff had to use mobile phones to contact the national control centre in York or individual stations to find out journey information.
"Often the line would be busy and people would have to wait a while for the information," said a GNER spokesman.
GNER operates 122 trains a day between London Kings Cross, the East Midlands, Yorkshire, the North East of England and Scotland.
