A1 upgrade moves closer
Part of the A1
Local organisations will be consulted over the work
A 38m project to upgrade a section of the A1 in West and North Yorkshire has taken a step forward with the formal appointment of a contractor.

Atkins-Balfour Beatty has been selected by the Highways Agency to carry out the work on a six-mile section between Bramham and Wetherby.

The work is part of a 520m plan to develop the A1 into a three-lane motorway on a 60-mile stretch between Ferrybridge and Barton.

Work on the scheme is due to start early in 2006.

Karen Sanderson, of the Highways Agency, said: "Extensive liaison has already been carried out with a wide range of organisations and the local communities around Barton and Wetherby.

"The contractor will further develop this liaison process allowing local communities to influence some of the scheme's design details."
