House struck by lightning
Lightening damage
No-one was injured as the lightning struck the house
A North Yorkshire couple had a lucky escape after their home was struck by lightning during a storm on Sunday evening.

Trisha and Peter Allison were watching television at their Sutton-on-the-Forest home, near York, when there was a loud bang and part of the ceiling collapsed.

Roof tiles had been blown off the house by the lightning strike and were scattered across the road outside their property.

Inside the house part of the ceiling in an upstairs room was damaged and the electrics blown by a power surge after the strike at 2300 BST.

Fire crews attended the property in Main Street to assess the damage.

Owner Peter Allison told BBC Look North: "We were just about to retire to bed, the storm was in progress, there was a huge bang, and saw a ball of light over my rear buildings and assumed that someone to the rear had been struck.

"I didn't realise that we had, until I smelled the smoke which was a rather acrid, burning rubber smell."

And he added: "I'm slightly worried as to what might have been."

No-one was injured in the property, although the couple's two dogs were agitated after the strike.
