Tesco plans smaller store in town

Tesco has drawn up new plans for a smaller store for Sheringham.

Tesco has revised its plans for a controversial store in Sheringham, Norfolk, making it smaller and closer to the town's main shopping street.

The new shop would be down from 2,760 sq m (29,000 sq ft) to a store of 2,100 sq m (22,000 sq ft).

Tesco said the new design by architects Wilkinson Eyre also puts the store closer to Station Road and the rest of the town's shops.

Previous plans were turned down in September 2008 after a public inquiry.

New visitors

Campaigners were concerned about the effect of a large store on small traders in the seaside resort and about the impact of traffic on roads that are busy in the summer months.

Now they want Tesco to take over a store in the town vacated by Woolworths.

Nick Gellatly, spokesman for Tesco, said: "It's clear there are many people that would like a local Tesco.

"The official decision on our last proposal confirmed that Sheringham needs a supermarket but that it should be smaller than our previous plans.

"We also know the store must be big enough to attract new visitors to town - that's what we are proposing."
