Tesco plan new shop bid in resort

Opponents want Tesco to move into a vacant site in the town

Tesco is to present another scheme for a store in a resort in Norfolk after previous plans were rejected at a public inquiry.

Architects Wilkinson Eyre will produce designs for a smaller supermarket in Sheringham.

North Norfolk District Council said they had not yet been approached but "will be happy to speak to them".

Eroica Mildmay, campaigning against the development, said Tesco should instead take the town's vacant Woolworths site.

Tesco said, if approved, the new store would create 120 local jobs and help families save money.

Ms Mildmay said a new scheme on Cromer Road would not solve the traffic problems and the threat to existing traders in the town, which was the basis of their campaign.

Nick Gellatly of Tesco said: "We are making new proposals because many people in and around Sheringham want a supermarket to open.

"The planning inspector's decision on our previous plans confirmed there was a need for a store in town and that the Cromer Road site was the right place."

The planning inquiry concluded benefits created by the shop would be outweighed by damage to the resort's character.
