A Norfolk council is to run its vehicles on cooking fat after teaming up with a bio-fuel company to collect oil from takeaway restaurants. Great Yarmouth Borough Council is to collect the waste oil for free from the town's fast food restaurants and J&H Bunns will convert it into bio-diesel.
The council plans to run 35 of its vehicles on the fuel.
It is also hoped the scheme will help cut the amount of waste oil that gets dumped illegally.
It is also cheaper - it costs 50p to make and sells for 10p less than standard diesel.
Simon Mutten, from the council, said: "This material is being collected, processed and used within the borough."
It would normally cost a restaurant �15 to dispose of one barrel of waste cooking oil.
The free collection service begins next month.
