Newspapers to cut up to 17 jobs

Media group Archant has announced plans for up to 17 job losses among its editorial staff on the Eastern Daily Press and Norwich Evening News.

The company, which owns newspapers across Cambs, Suffolk, Essex and Herts, said the cuts were likely to hit production staff and its sports team.

In a statement issued on Tuesday evening, Archant said it was now consulting with unions over the plans.

Last year nine job cuts were announced at Archant's Ipswich-based newspapers.

The move saw the merger of the sub-editing teams for the East Anglian Daily Times and Evening Star.

Archant said the staff cuts were part of a plan to "centralise its editorial production and sports units".

An Archant spokesman said the decision followed "months of in-depth analysis, carried out by two independent consultants".

Barry Dennis, managing director of Archant Norfolk, said: "Like newspaper groups all over the UK, we are looking at the way we operate our newsrooms.

"Times are changing and we have to change with them. Our vision is to provide news and information services to the public in whatever form they want to receive them.

"This move is designed to help us achieve that objective. It's a case of working smarter. Merging the various production and sports units will allow this to happen."
