The match was held in memory of the Hillsborough disaster |
More than 20,000 people packed Anfield stadium for a match held in memory of the 96 people who died as a result of the Hillsborough disaster. The Liverpool Legends, comprising ex-Liverpool footballers, beat the All Stars, captained by actor Ricky Tomlinson, 3-1 on Thursday night. Ian Rush, John Aldridge and Kenny Dalglish scored, with Teddy Sheringham hitting one for the All Stars. Mr Tomlinson said the turnout for the match "spoke volumes for Liverpool". The event marked last month's 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster and raised cash for the Marina Dalglish Appeal, which will be put towards a new radiotherapy centre at University Hospital in Aintree. "I know we're in the middle of a credit crunch and times are hard but it's still worth digging into your pocket for a worthy cause and this one is," said Mr Tomlinson. Former Liverpool keeper Paul Harrison, whose father and uncle were among the 96 supporters killed in 1989, captained the Legends to its victory. The All Stars included former Everton players coached by Mr Tomlinson, ex-Liverpool assistant Phil Thompson and Reds defender Jamie Carragher.
