Rush is Liverpool's record goal-scorer with 346 strikes

Liverpool legend Ian Rush is confident the city will come together for Thursday's Hillsborough Memorial match.

The match will see a number of former Liverpool players and celebrities play at Anfield to raise money for The Marina Dalglish appeal.

Rush told BBC Radio Merseyside: "In 1989, in the FA Cup final, the city united and I'm sure they can do that again on Thursday.

"We are looking to unite the city for the Marina Dalglish fund."

The appeal, which was set up by the wife of former Liverpool player and manager Kenny Dalglish, hopes to use the match to raise the funds for the building of a new radiotherapy unit at University Hospital in Aintree.

A team comprised of former Liverpool players will take on a team of All Stars, including former Everton players coached by actor Ricky Tomlinson, ex-Liverpool assistant Phil Thompson and Reds defender Jamie Carragher.

Rush is hoping the people of Merseyside will come out in force to back the event.

"It's a great cause and if we can get a lot of people to come and watch the game it will go to show again just how fantastic this city is," the former Wales international said.

Rush remains Liverpool's record goal-scorer and says he is looking forward to playing at Anfield again on 14 May.

"We've had our time now but it is great when you can still put on your boots and try and entertain the crowd.

"It would be great to score in the Kop end, but I'm not sure I'll be able to last 90 minutes," joked Rush.
