Culture board meet to decide role
Mathew Street festival 2006
The outdoor stages were cancelled two weeks before the event
The board of the Liverpool Culture Company will meet later to discuss its future role after the Mathew Street Festival was cancelled.

The outdoor stages at the music festival were cancelled two weeks before the event after safety concerns.

Some board members claim they have no power over the Culture Company, and are calling for the it to be disbanded.

Phil Redmond said he believed it should be replaced by an artistic advisory group.

Council leader Warren Bradley said the board had no idea there were any problems with the Mathew Street festival.

The outdoor music event kicked off the city's 800th birthday celebrations.

In 2006, more than 100,000 people attended on any one day of the bank holiday weekend to see acts including Gerry and the Pacemakers, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Lightning Seeds.
