MPs call for more culture police

A group of Merseyside MPs are calling for extra police officers to be employed in Liverpool during its year as Capital of Culture in 2008.

Merseyside Police have said an extra 200 officers will be needed to deal with the influx of visitors to the city next year.

The MPs, led by Knowsley North Labour MP George Howarth, believe council tax payers should not foot the bill.

The group of 10 signed a Commons motion asking the government for extra cash.

Mr Howarth tabled the motion and it was signed by MPs Peter Kilfoyle, Joe Benton, Louise Ellman, Angela Eagle, Bob Wareing, Jane Kennedy, Eddie O'Hara, Ben Chapman and Frank Field.

The motion read: "Since this is a European designation and will attract a large number of visitors from elsewhere in the UK and abroad, the cost of policing cannot be viewed as a local problem."

Five years ago, Greater Manchester Police received extra cash from the government for policing the Commonwealth Games.
