The Turner Prize for modern art is to be presented in Liverpool in 2007 - the first time it has been presented outside London in its 24-year history. The exhibition and the awards ceremony will be held at Tate Liverpool, a gallery spokeswoman confirmed.
She said: "This is very good news for Liverpool in the run-up to what promises to be an exceptional arts programme for 2008."
Precise arrangements are being finalised, she added.
Named after early 19th Century artist JMW Turner, the award's previous winners include Damien Hirst and cross-dressing potter Grayson Perry.
Peter Mearns, director of marketing at the regeneration body The Northwest Regional Development Agency, said: "The Turner Prize coming to Liverpool is incredibly important for Merseyside and the Northwest and is a major boost for the city's Capital of Culture celebrations.
"The UK's most prestigious art exhibition and awards ceremony will be instrumental in encouraging more visitors to come and experience the region's outstanding artistic offering."
