Merseyside prisoners freed early
HMP Liverpool
Governor Alan Brown said Walton prison is full every night
Up to 70 prisoners are to be released early from Liverpool's Walton jail as part of a national scheme to ease severe prison overcrowding.

The prisoners are being let out up to 18 days before their release was due in an effort to free space and cut costs.

A report from the chief inspector of prisons last week highlighted severe overcrowding at Walton Prison.

Walton HMP Governor Alan Brown said this meant staff had less time to work on a one-to-one basis with inmates.

He said: "There is a problem currently, it's not an unknown issue in the prison estate - we are full.

"Every night Liverpool prison is full to capacity - 1335 men.

"That does give myself and my staff some problems because we have that constant churn of people coming in and out and maybe the time we would like to give to individuals isn't achieved because of that constant movement."
