A 13-year-old girl who was sexually assaulted in a swimming pool changing room was subjected to an "horrific attack", Merseyside police have said. The girl was enticed into a cubicle and assaulted at the Europa Pools complex in Birkenhead on Monday afternoon.
Her attacker was a white man, aged 15 to 18, 5ft 8in tall with an athletic appearance and short brown hair.
Two 16-year-old boys, who were arrested in connection with the incident, have been released on bail.
Incidents 'rare'
Det Insp George Davies, of Merseyside Police, said the attacker was seen to leave the pool with two other men after the attack.
He said they were not present when the crime was committed but could hold vital information.
"This is an horrific attack on a young girl who'd left her family in the pool area whilst using the hair drying facilities," Mr Davies said.
"The victim has now been interviewed by specially trained officers and the investigation team is currently examining CCTV footage from the premises and interviewing staff who were on duty at Europa Pools when the incident took place."
Mr Davies also urged anyone who knows the identity of the attacker to contact police as a matter of urgency.
"I would also like to stress that incidents such as this are extremely rare, but we need to find the person responsible for this assault," he said.
