Kenny Dalglish was managing the Liverpool side |
More than 30,000 fans relived the first all-Merseyside FA Cup Final and raised funds for cancer research. The proceeds from the re-match of the 1986 Liverpool v Everton game will go to the cancer charity founded by Marina Dalglish, wife of Anfield legend Kenny.
The Marina Dalglish Appeal aims to build a new breast cancer centre of excellence at Aintree Hospital.
Saves by Blues Bobby Mimms looked like keeping it 0-0 before a last minute winner by Liverpool's John Durnin.
Rival bosses
Mrs Dalglish founded the appeal after being treated for breast cancer.
Her husband Kenny was managing the Liverpool Old Boys while Howard Kendall managed the Everton side - just as the two did in 1986 when the sides met at Wembley and Liverpool won 3-1.
The historic final had both sets of supporters united in the chant "Merseypride".
A crowd of 32,947 saw stars such as Peter Reid, Alan Hansen, Kevin Ratcliffe, Ian Rush and Adrian Heath roll back the years.
Their legs were no match for their speed of thought although one piece of vintage Dalglish magic brought a superb save by Mimms.
