Michael Shields is suspected of attempted murder |
Two teenage Liverpool fans being held in Bulgaria have not been charged, the Foreign Office has confirmed. Michael Shields is being held on suspicion of attempted murder while Anthony Wilson is suspected of hooliganism and possessing drugs.
The 18-year-olds, from Liverpool, were arrested after going to Bulgaria on holiday after watching their team's Champions League victory in Istanbul.
They are suspected by local police of attacking a 25-year-old man.
A third Briton also implicated in the incident, Bradley Thompson, 19, from Liverpool, is believed to have received a suspended six-month sentence.
There were reports on Monday that Mr Shields and Mr Wilson had been charged by Bulgarian prosecutors.
But a Foreign Office spokesman said this was incorrect and they had only been kept in jail on "informal charges", the equivalent of being remanded on bail in the UK.
