Michael Shields and Anthony Wilson, who are both 18 and from Liverpool, went to the Golden Sands resort in Bulgaria after the club's Champions League win.

They had been due to fly back to the UK on 29 May, but were arrested along with several others by local police.

The pair were arrested on suspicion of attacking a man a few hours earlier and were detained for further questioning.

Family plea

The charges relate to a 25-year-old man who was said to have been hit on the head with a stone.

The victim is believed to have suffered serious injuries.

Michael Shields' family arrived in the country on Monday to be told he could be held in custody for two months.

His father, also called Michael, has made an appeal for other Liverpool fans to come forward with information.

Two other fans were arrested with the teenagers.

One was released without charge and another, 19-year-old Bradley Thompson, was given bail but must stay in Bulgaria.

Mr Shields' father arrived in Varna on Monday night and saw his son briefly in court on Tuesday morning.

Speaking from Bulgaria, Michael Shields senior said: "He is being locked up for something he hasn't done.

"All I want is justice. I want my lad home and back in Liverpool with his family where he belongs.

"I would appeal to anyone in Liverpool and all over England to please help me get my son back home."
