A prisoner has died after being found in his cell hanging from a sink by his belt, the Prison Service said. Timothy Davenport, 40, was discovered by staff at HMP Liverpool on Sunday morning, a spokeswoman said on Monday.
Staff attempted resuscitation and paramedics were called, but Davenport died. He was sentenced to six years' imprisonment for theft in July 2002.
The spokeswoman said the Prisons Ombudsman would investigate. It is the third death at Liverpool this month.
"Our condolences go to his friends and family at this tragic time," she added.
"As with all deaths within the prison estate, there will be an investigation by the Prisons Ombudsman."
Two inmates were found dead at HMP Liverpool in the space of three days earlier this month.
