Unions want to cut costs at Edge Lane in order to save jobs |
Union officials say talks with MPs over the closure of Liverpool's Marconi factory have gone well. Amicus said it had devised a strategy to try and save some of the 700 jobs that are due to be axed from the Edge Lane site.
Marconi said it was closing the factory after missing out on a 10bn British Telecom network upgrade contract.
It wants to move 355 jobs to its plant in Chorley, Lancashire, in order to reduce costs.
'Best shot'
Amicus North West regional secretary Kevin Coyle said he had asked MPs to lobby economic development agencies and Trade and Industry Secretary Alan Johnson to find ways to cut costs at Edge Lane and keep jobs in the city.
He added: "While we're not confident that it will save the plant, certainly its our best shot at saving some jobs in Liverpool."
Marconi says it faces a 50m fall in revenue as a result of losing the BT contract and plans to shut the Edge Lane site by the end of 2005.
It has offered to help other workers who are made redundant find new jobs.
