Unions say 300 jobs could be kept on Merseyside |
Union leaders at the threatened Marconi plant in Liverpool were meeting Merseyside MPs on Friday in an effort to find a solution to its closure. The telecoms giant said it was shutting the Edge Lane factory with the loss of about 700 jobs by the end of the year.
It announced the plan after failing to win a share of British Telecom's 10bn contract to upgrade its network.
It has promised to relocate 300 staff elsewhere in the North West, but Amicus want the jobs to remain in the city.
It believes a cost effective plan can be found.
The talks between union officials and MPs were taking place at the Devonshire House Hotel.
The firm, which says it is facing a 50m fall in revenue, has also offered to help other workers who are made redundant find new jobs.
